OVERVIEW
The Calanques are a chain of narrow rocky inlets cut into bright limestone along the Mediterranean coast. Sheer cliffs, scrub-covered ridges and small beaches create a rugged protected area immediately beside major urban centres. Some coves are reached by foot, others by boat, and only a few contain small harbour settlements.
Walking routes range from short descents to demanding traverses over exposed rock, with little shade and limited water. Boat trips reveal the scale of the cliffs without the physical effort, while swimming is possible in sheltered coves when conditions allow. Fire restrictions, heat and strong winds can affect access, so plans need to remain flexible.
