OVERVIEW
The Calanques are a chain of narrow rocky inlets cut into bright limestone along the Mediterranean coast. Sheer cliffs, scrub-covered ridges and small beaches create a rugged protected area immediately beside major urban centres. Some coves are reached by foot, others by boat, and only a few contain small harbour settlements.
Walking routes range from short descents to demanding traverses over exposed rock, with little shade and limited water. Boat trips reveal the scale of the cliffs without the physical effort, while swimming is possible in sheltered coves when conditions allow. Fire restrictions, heat and strong winds can affect access, so plans need to remain flexible.

THINGS TO DO
Cruise Calanques’ main waterways
Choose a boat trip that gives a clear view of Calanques’ main waterways and the surrounding landscape. Routes and operating periods vary, so confirm the departure point and current schedule.
Paddle Calanques’ main waters
Paddle around Calanques’ main paddling waters on a route suited to local water and weather conditions. Hire equipment or a guide where currents, access points or changing forecasts make independent planning difficult.
Hike around Salin-de-Giraud
Choose a walk around Salin-de-Giraud that matches your time, fitness and current conditions. Check the route and weather locally instead of assuming every trail is accessible year-round.
Hiking
2 hours to full day
Find Calanques’ rocky coves
Spend time at Calanques’ rocky coves rather than treating every nearby beach as interchangeable. Swimming conditions, access and facilities can vary, so check locally before entering the water.
