OVERVIEW
Arles is a small city on the Rhône River in southern France, shaped by Roman history and the landscapes of Provence. A well-preserved amphitheatre and ancient theatre stand within a compact centre of narrow streets, stone houses and shaded squares. The city also served as an important subject for Vincent van Gogh, though little from his time survives unchanged.
Markets, cafés and local festivals keep the centre active beyond its monuments. The city sits between fertile countryside and the marshes of the Camargue, where horses, cattle and birdlife define a very different landscape. This position makes it possible to combine archaeology and everyday urban life with easy access to rural scenery without turning the visit into a long regional circuit.

THINGS TO DO
Experience Arles’ defining festival
Arles’ defining annual festival is a scheduled event rather than a year-round attraction. Check the current dates, programme and ticket arrangements before building the rest of the trip around it.
Festivals
Half or full day
Trace local history at Abbaye de Montmajour
Use Abbaye de Montmajour to understand a specific part of Arles’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
Explore Musée de l'Arles et de la Provence antiques
Explore Musée de l'Arles et de la Provence antiques to understand the ancient settlement, belief or engineering that shaped Arles. Allow enough time to read the site rather than treating it as a photo stop.
