OVERVIEW
The Camargue is a flat wetland region where a major river divides before reaching the Mediterranean. Lagoons, salt pans, rice fields and grazing land create a broad open landscape with few elevations. Flamingos gather in shallow water, while distinctive white horses and dark cattle are raised on farms across the delta.
Wildlife is best seen from reserve paths, quiet roads and observation points around the lagoons. Horse riding, cycling and visits to small towns reveal the human side of the landscape, including ranching and pilgrimage traditions. Mosquitoes, heat and strong winds can be significant, but the changing light and wide horizons give the region a character unlike nearby resort coasts.
