OVERVIEW
Arcachon Bay is a broad tidal basin on France’s Atlantic coast, protected by a long forested peninsula and Europe’s highest sand dune. One side contains a traditional resort town with beaches and nineteenth-century villas, while other shores are lined with oyster-farming villages and working ports. Channels, marshes and exposed sandbanks change dramatically between high and low tide.
The main town provides beaches and services, the peninsula has quieter villages and access to the open ocean, and working harbours reveal the local oyster industry. Boat trips make the tidal geography easier to grasp. Established holiday resorts and active maritime landscapes coexist around the same broad body of water.
