OVERVIEW
Bordeaux stands on a broad bend of the Garonne River in south-west France. Eighteenth-century façades, formal squares and former warehouses reflect its long importance as a trading port, while renovated quays now provide parks, tram lines and public spaces. The historic centre spreads across several walkable districts rather than one enclosed old town.
Wine remains central through merchants, museums and easy access to surrounding vineyards, but the city has more than a single theme. Markets, restaurants, independent shops and riverside neighbourhoods create a strong everyday atmosphere. The flat centre is well suited to walking and cycling, and modern cultural spaces occupy several former industrial sites.
