OVERVIEW
Biarritz grew from a fishing settlement into a fashionable nineteenth-century resort on France’s Atlantic coast. Villas, hotels and promenades overlook a sequence of beaches broken by rocky headlands, while the centre contains markets, restaurants and traces of its royal past. Strong waves have also made the town one of Europe’s established surfing centres.
The coast changes noticeably from broad surf beaches to sheltered coves and dramatic viewpoints. Seafood, Basque cooking and evening walks keep the town active beyond beach hours. The centre is polished and often busy, yet working harbours and residential streets preserve a more local side away from the principal seafront.
