OVERVIEW
The Apostle Islands lie off the northern coast of Wisconsin in the United States, with twenty-one forested islands and a protected mainland shoreline. Historic lighthouses and fishing stations record the area’s maritime past, while wave-cut sandstone caves form its most distinctive natural feature. The small town of Bayfield is the main departure point for ferries, cruises and kayaking trips.
Lake conditions determine how the archipelago can be experienced. Calm weather allows boats and kayaks to approach caves and cliffs, while wind and cold water can quickly change plans. Many islands remain undeveloped, so camping and guided trips provide the main access. The combination of lighthouses, clear water and rugged shore gives the region the scale and character of an inland sea.
