OVERVIEW
Marquette stands on the southern shore of Lake Superior, with a working harbour, university districts and residential streets rising from the water. Historic ore docks and former industrial buildings remain prominent along parts of the shoreline. Away from the principal landmarks, local food gives way gradually to lake shore across the wider area. Across the wider area, lake shore remains closely connected with beaches, rather than forming an isolated visitor zone.
Walking, cycling and local food provide a strong introduction, while nearby trails and beaches expand the outdoor appeal. Winters are long and severe, but the lake and hills give the city a distinctive northern character. Beaches is encountered differently from lake shore, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination.
