OVERVIEW
Yala is a protected savanna region in south eastern Sri Lanka, with scrub forest, wetlands and coastal plains supporting elephants, leopards and abundant birdlife. Different sectors vary substantially in access and habitat. Local settlements and connecting roads occupy the space between dry forest and lagoons and leopard habitat across a large savanna region where wildlife and coastline meet, keeping the wider destination visibly inhabited.
Game drives provide the main experience, though sightings are never guaranteed and popular routes can become crowded. Seasonal closures and water conditions affect wildlife movement. Dry forest draws most attention, but lagoons and leopard habitat across a large savanna region where wildlife and coastline meet contributes equally to the destination’s character and everyday life.

THINGS TO DO
Find Yala’s best-known beaches
Spend time at Yala’s best-known beaches rather than treating every nearby beach as interchangeable. Swimming conditions, access and facilities can vary, so check locally before entering the water.
Drive Yala’s scenic roads
Build a manageable drive through Yala’s scenic roads, allowing for stops and slower roads. In a destination as spread out as Yala, choose a route that works from your base.
Road Trips
Half or full day
Take a game drive in Yala
Take a guided game drive in Yala’s principal game-viewing area, using local expertise to understand habitats and animal behaviour. Wildlife moves freely, so no species or sighting should be guaranteed.
