OVERVIEW
Arugam Bay is a small coastal settlement on Sri Lanka’s eastern shore, known above all for surfing. A curving beach fronts a simple strip of guesthouses, cafés and small hotels, while several nearby points provide waves for different ability levels. Fishing boats, lagoons and dry scrubland show that the area is more than a single resort beach.
Surf culture shapes the busiest months, but the surrounding area also offers wildlife, birdwatching and quieter stretches of coast. Roads remain narrow and development is modest compared with larger beach centres. The village is sociable and informal, with many days organised around sea conditions, meals and short trips rather than a long list of urban attractions.
