OVERVIEW
Tozeur is a small town in southern Tunisia, with residential districts, date plantations and traditional brick architecture surrounded by arid plains, while oasis agriculture and regional transport remain important. The relationship between palm groves, patterned brickwork and desert light in an oasis town opening towards salt flats and mountain canyons and town gives the wider destination a distinctive structure beyond its principal visitor area.
Markets, gardens and desert excursions provide the main experiences, while nearby canyons and salt landscapes add striking variety. Summer heat is extreme, making cooler months preferable. Spending time with both palm groves and patterned brickwork and desert light in an oasis town opening towards salt flats and mountain canyons reveals more of the destination than focusing only on its best known sights.

THINGS TO DO
Look closely at Bled El Hadhar for a concrete introduction to Tozeur’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Trace local history at Dry lakes
Use Dry lakes to understand a specific part of Tozeur’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
Learn local traditions at Medina
Use Medina to learn about living traditions connected to Tozeur, choosing respectful, locally led encounters. Avoid treating contemporary communities or religious practice as a performance.
