OVERVIEW
Thessaloniki is a large port city in northern Greece, with dense neighbourhoods, archaeological remains and a long waterfront extending beside the Thermaic Gulf. Byzantine, Ottoman and Jewish histories remain central to its identity. The relationship between waterfront promenades, byzantine churches and lively food streets in a large northern city shaped by trade and migration and city gives the wider destination a distinctive structure beyond its principal visitor area.
Food, museums and evening walks provide exceptional urban depth, while markets and residential districts reveal a strong everyday character. The city feels energetic and less formal than the capital. Spending time with both waterfront promenades and byzantine churches and lively food streets in a large northern city shaped by trade and migration reveals more of the destination than focusing only on its best known sights.
