OVERVIEW
Skardu is a small town in northern Pakistan, set within a broad valley of rivers, sand and rugged mountains. It serves as a major gateway to high altitude trekking and climbing. The relationship between high desert valleys and turquoise rivers and immense mountain access from a remote town beneath some of the world’s highest peaks gives the wider destination a clearly recognisable physical character.
Road journeys, forts and lakes provide local interest, while expeditions require careful logistics, while altitude and weather shape every visit. Time spent around residential areas also brings surrounding countryside into view, adding another layer to the visit, especially where residential areas meets surrounding countryside. The contrast between surrounding countryside and local streets becomes clearest when more than one area is explored.

THINGS TO DO
Trace local history at Karphocho Fort
Use Karphocho Fort to understand a specific part of Skardu’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
Use Skardu’s main climbing area as the focus for a climbing day suited to your ability. Local access, equipment and weather matter, so go with a qualified guide when conditions or routes are unfamiliar.
Walk Skardu’s desert trails
Choose a walk around Skardu’s desert trails that matches your time, fitness and current conditions. Check the route and weather locally instead of assuming every trail is accessible year-round.
