OVERVIEW
Shangri-La is a small town in south western China, set on a high plateau of grassland, lakes and forest. Tibetan monasteries, traditional houses and modern visitor development coexist across the surrounding valleys. Residential areas occupies a different part of the area from surrounding countryside, creating a clear physical contrast. Beyond the main centre, surrounding countryside and residential areas continue to shape settlement and movement across the wider destination.
Altitude requires a slower pace, while weather can change quickly. Monastery visits, village roads and short hikes provide stronger depth than the heavily branded central streets. The contrast between residential areas and local streets becomes clearest when more than one area is explored. Local streets is experienced differently from residential areas, so both areas contribute separate perspectives.
