OVERVIEW
Dali stands between the Cang Mountains and Erhai Lake in south-western China. The old town retains gates, courtyards and low traditional buildings, while modern development extends beyond the historic walls. Bai villages, temples and farming areas surround the lake, giving the wider region a strong cultural identity.
Cycling and driving around the lake reveal villages, fields and changing mountain views. The old town is highly commercial, but quieter lanes and surrounding communities provide more local character. Hiking, food and craft traditions add depth beyond the best-known architecture. Early mornings and rural lakeside routes offer the clearest relief from the busiest visitor areas.
