São Tomé is a volcanic island in the Gulf of Guinea, with forested mountains, coastal villages and former cocoa plantations spread across a humid landscape. The capital occupies the gentler north eastern coast. Shoreline occupies a different part of the area from island interior, creating a clear physical contrast. The transition between island interior and shoreline remains visible away from the principal visitor routes.

Infrastructure is modest, making slow travel and local guidance valuable. Shoreline is experienced differently from coastal settlements, so both areas contribute separate perspectives.
