OVERVIEW

Príncipe is a small volcanic island in the Gulf of Guinea, with steep forested mountains, coastal villages and former plantation estates. Much of the interior remains protected and lightly disturbed. Former cocoa estates still influence settlement and architecture, with plantation buildings scattered through the forest and along the coast. Only a few small settlements interrupt the forested and mountainous interior.

Walking, birdwatching and boat trips reveal a landscape rich in endemic species. Services are limited, but the low visitor density and strong community life make the island unusually intimate. Conservation projects work closely with local communities, reflecting the island’s unusual concentration of endemic birds, plants and marine life. Sea turtles nest seasonally on several remote beaches.
