OVERVIEW
Saaremaa is Estonia’s largest island, with low farmland, juniper coast and small settlements connected by long quiet roads. A historic castle anchors the main town, while meteorite craters, wetlands and fishing villages are scattered across the interior. Ferry ports and causeways connect the island with neighbouring communities. Local food occupies a different part of the area from coast, creating a clear physical contrast beyond the central visitor zone.
Cycling and driving reveal the island’s open scale, while spas and local food provide a gentler rhythm. Summer is busiest, but the quieter seasons emphasise the landscape and local communities. A visit centred only on wetlands would overlook coast, where local activity and landscape remain equally visible. Villages is experienced differently from castle, so both areas contribute separate perspectives.
