OVERVIEW
Riviera Maya is a long coastal region on the Yucatán Peninsula, with sandy beaches, coral reefs and limestone forest extending inland. Resort complexes, expanding towns and archaeological sites create sharp contrasts along the shoreline. The wider destination also includes reefs and forest, which place the principal sights within a broader inhabited landscape. The destination extends from reef towards reefs, with local life continuing well beyond the best known landmarks.
Swimming, diving and visits to ancient sites provide the main experiences, while cenotes reveal the region’s hidden freshwater landscape. Choosing a base carefully helps reduce transport and avoid spending the entire stay within a resort corridor. Reef is experienced differently from beaches, so both areas contribute separate perspectives. Coast is experienced differently from forest, so both areas contribute separate perspectives.
