OVERVIEW
Cancún occupies the north-eastern edge of the Yucatán Peninsula, with a narrow hotel zone stretching between the sea and a lagoon. Large resorts, restaurants and entertainment venues line the beachfront, while the mainland city contains residential districts, markets and transport services. The destination was planned around tourism rather than developed from a historic coastal centre.
White sand and clear water are the main attractions, supported by diving, sailing and easy access to offshore islands. The hotel zone is polished and convenient but often feels separate from everyday city life. Day trips reach archaeological sites, underground swimming pools and smaller coastal towns, though traffic and excursion times can be considerable.
