OVERVIEW
Rethymno is a small coastal town on Crete, with a preserved historic centre, working harbour and extensive beach development stretching east. Venetian and Ottoman architecture remain closely woven into residential streets beneath the large fortress. Modern neighbourhoods and local schools extend well beyond the preserved old quarter. The transition between mountains and fortifications remains visible across the wider destination, especially away from the busiest routes.
Walking through the old quarter reveals fountains, courtyards and local shops beyond the busiest harbour restaurants. Inland villages, mountain roads and monasteries provide a strong contrast with the developed coast. Routes between coast and harbour reveal how the destination changes beyond its principal attractions. Conditions around harbour can differ noticeably from those near beaches, making flexible timing useful.

THINGS TO DO
Trace local history at Fortezza of Rethymnon
Use Fortezza of Rethymnon to understand a specific part of Rethymno’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
Look closely at Arkadi Monastery for a concrete introduction to Rethymno’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Find Rethymno’s best-known beaches
Spend time at Rethymno’s best-known beaches rather than treating every nearby beach as interchangeable. Swimming conditions, access and facilities can vary, so check locally before entering the water.
