OVERVIEW
Heraklion is the largest city on Crete, built around a historic centre enclosed by substantial Venetian walls. A fortress guards the old harbour, while markets, museums and modern commercial streets fill the urban core. The city is also the main gateway to the nearby Bronze Age palace of Knossos. Island interior occupies a different part of the destination from markets, giving the wider area a clear physical structure.
The archaeological museum is essential for understanding the island’s ancient history. Food markets and neighbourhood restaurants add a more contemporary view, while the waterfront remains busy with ferries and fishing boats. The city feels practical and energetic rather than polished. Conditions around harbour differ from those near island interior, making flexible timing useful.
