OVERVIEW
Qufu is a small city in eastern China, known for a vast temple, family mansion and cemetery connected with Confucius and his descendants. Modern streets and residential districts surround the protected historic complexes. The cemetery extends through a large wooded area containing generations of family graves, making ancestry central to the historic landscape. The surrounding plain remains intensively cultivated and densely settled.
The sites reward slow exploration because architecture, ritual and landscape are closely related. Museums and local interpretation add context beyond the famous name. Ceremonial gates, halls and stone inscriptions show how Confucian thought became embedded in state ritual and architectural form. Contemporary ceremonial events continue to draw scholars and visitors from across East Asia.
