OVERVIEW
Kaifeng is a historic city in eastern China, once one of the world’s largest urban centres during the Northern Song dynasty. Pagodas, temples and reconstructed heritage streets preserve fragments of that past. The modern city spreads across a flat plain close to the Yellow River. The transition between temples and local food is visible across the destination, especially away from its best known centre.
Museums and surviving monuments provide the strongest historical context. Night markets and local food add everyday energy. Repeated flooding and rebuilding have left fewer intact historic districts than the city’s former importance might suggest. A visit centred only on local food would overlook river, where the wider landscape and local activity remain visible.
