OVERVIEW
Qom is a large city in central Iran, centred on a major shrine and a dense network of seminaries, markets and religious institutions. Pilgrimage and scholarship shape much of the urban economy and daily life. The shrine complex anchors the centre, while seminaries and publishing institutions extend its influence throughout the Shia religious world. Desert plains and low mountains surround the rapidly expanding urban area.
Religious etiquette is essential, while access to some spaces may be restricted. Current travel conditions should be checked carefully before planning. The city receives large numbers of pilgrims, so daily rhythms, accommodation and commerce are closely tied to religious observance. Large religious gatherings can transform traffic and movement throughout the central districts.

THINGS TO DO
Trace local history at Dokhtar Castle
Use Dokhtar Castle to understand a specific part of Qom’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
Admire Jameh Mosque of Qom
Look closely at Jameh Mosque of Qom for a concrete introduction to Qom’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Visit Shrine of Fatima-al-Massumeh
Visit Shrine of Fatima-al-Massumeh with attention to its continuing religious meaning as well as its architecture or history. Dress and behave respectfully, and expect access to change during services.
