OVERVIEW
Isfahan stands on a high plateau in central Iran, organised around a vast ceremonial square, monumental mosques and historic bazaars. Bridges cross a broad river corridor lined with gardens and promenades. Armenian churches, palaces and residential quarters reveal a diverse imperial history. Churches and palaces belong to the same connected landscape, although they often feel distinct on arrival, with mosques providing an additional point of connection.
Architecture and urban design are the main strengths, especially the relationship between squares, markets and water. Craft workshops remain active in metalwork, textiles and miniature painting. Current travel restrictions and political conditions require careful checking. The relationship between markets and palaces becomes clearest when the destination is explored over more than one area.

THINGS TO DO
Trace local history at Naqsh-e Jahan Square
Use Naqsh-e Jahan Square to understand a specific part of Isfahan’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
Browse Isfahan’s craft markets
Browse Isfahan’s craft markets for goods connected to Isfahan, focusing on local makers, produce or established specialities. Check market days and avoid assuming every stall is locally made.
Look closely at Imam Mosque for a concrete introduction to Isfahan’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
