OVERVIEW
Qingdao is a major coastal city in eastern China, with beaches, wooded hills and dense urban districts arranged around a broad bay. European influenced architecture survives beside modern towers and industrial port areas. The older centre climbs wooded slopes near the original harbour, while newer districts extend east along beaches and broad avenues. Rocky headlands divide the urban shoreline into separate beaches and bays.
Seafood, waterfront walks and local beer provide the strongest everyday character. The city is extensive, but selected coastal districts remain pleasant for walking and cycling. Brewing began under foreign administration, but seafood markets and local street food provide a wider picture of the city’s coastal culture. Mountain temples and coastal villages provide worthwhile excursions beyond the main urban shore.
