Pyongyang is a large planned capital on the Taedong River, with monumental buildings, broad boulevards and residential districts arranged across an extensive urban area. Architecture and public space are closely tied to political ideology. Metro stations, monuments and carefully landscaped riverbanks form part of a highly managed presentation of the capital. Outer residential districts are arranged around factories, institutions and broad transport corridors.

Foreign visits, when permitted, follow controlled itineraries with limited independent movement. The city’s scale and design remain significant, but any understanding is shaped by strict access and presentation. Daily life remains difficult to assess independently because visitors have limited contact with ordinary neighbourhoods and residents. Architectural lighting and choreographed public events reinforce the formal urban image.
