OVERVIEW
Prince Edward Island is a low island in eastern Canada, with red sandstone shores, cultivated fields and small towns connected by quiet roads. Fishing, farming and literary associations shape its public identity. Settlement is dispersed through farms and coastal villages, with only a few small urban centres interrupting the rural landscape. Red soil gives fields, roadsides and eroding cliffs their characteristic colour.
Driving and cycling reveal beaches, lighthouses and rural communities at a relaxed pace. Summer is busiest, while spring and autumn provide a quieter view of the agricultural landscape. Potatoes, shellfish and dairy products shape both the economy and regional cooking, linking visitor experiences directly with working agriculture. Coastal erosion remains visible along many exposed sandstone cliffs.
