OVERVIEW
Pohnpei is a high volcanic island in Micronesia, with steep forested interior peaks, waterfalls and coastal mangroves. Villages and roads circle the lower slopes, while extensive stone ruins lie on small artificial islets offshore. Heavy rainfall feeds short rivers and waterfalls, while the surrounding lagoon supports fishing, reef travel and mangrove ecosystems. Traditional land divisions still influence settlement and community life around the coast.
Rain is frequent and supports dense vegetation throughout the island. Hiking, diving and boat trips reveal very different environments, while local guidance is especially valuable for cultural sites and remote trails. The offshore ruins consist of massive stone walls built across artificial channels, creating one of the Pacific’s most unusual archaeological landscapes.
