OVERVIEW
Poconos is a mountain region in north eastern Pennsylvania, with wooded hills, rivers and scattered resort communities spread across a wide area. Small towns, lakes and former industrial routes create a landscape shaped by both recreation and settlement. The region has no single centre, and its character changes between wooded plateaux, river valleys, lake communities and older railway towns.
Hiking, skiing and water activities vary strongly by season, while autumn colour draws large weekend crowds. Choosing one valley or town gives a more coherent experience than attempting to cover the entire region. Resort history ranges from family lodges to honeymoon properties, while public forests and trails provide a less commercial experience.

THINGS TO DO
Trace Poconos’ industrial history
Use Poconos’ industrial history to understand a specific part of Poconos’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior. Choose it only if it fits your base and route.
Choose terrain at Poconos’ principal ski area that matches your ability. Operating dates, lift access and snow quality depend on the season and conditions, so check the current report before travelling.
Hike around Appalachian Trail
Choose a walk around Appalachian Trail that matches your time, fitness and current conditions. Check the route and weather locally instead of assuming every trail is accessible year-round. Choose it only if it fits your base and route.
