OVERVIEW
The Catskills form a wooded upland region in south-eastern New York, cut by streams, reservoirs and rounded peaks. Small towns, former farming communities and historic resorts are spread across several valleys, while protected land supports extensive hiking routes. The landscape is gentler than western mountain ranges but changes strongly with the seasons.
Waterfalls, swimming holes and forest trails dominate summer, while autumn foliage and winter snow create very different conditions. Independent inns, music venues and farm-focused restaurants have revived several towns. The region is too broad for one central base, so choosing a valley or cluster of communities helps avoid spending most of the trip driving.
