OVERVIEW
Albany is the capital of New York State, located on the west bank of the Hudson River about three hours north of New York City. The centre contains a striking group of government buildings, including the ornate state capitol and a vast modern civic plaza. Older residential streets, nineteenth-century houses and small museums show a more intimate city beyond the monumental administrative district.
Architecture, political history and a long role as a river and rail hub provide the strongest reasons to visit. Government buildings can be toured, while nearby neighbourhoods contain cafés, parks and local cultural venues. The city works naturally as part of a wider journey through the Hudson Valley or towards the Adirondack Mountains, but its civic history has value in its own right.

THINGS TO DO
Visit Albany’s history museums
Focus on Albany’s history museums for a collection that adds real context to Albany. Check current exhibitions and opening days, then allow enough time for the sections most relevant to the destination.
Admire Albany’s landmark architecture
Look closely at Albany’s landmark architecture for a concrete introduction to Albany’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Trace Albany’s historic quarter
Use Albany’s historic quarter to understand a specific part of Albany’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
