OVERVIEW
Palenque is a small town and nearby archaeological region in southern Mexico, where monumental Maya temples rise from humid forest. The modern settlement provides services, while waterfalls and rural communities extend across the wider area. The transition between temples and ruins is visible across the destination, especially away from its best known centre. Beyond the central area, ruins and museums continue to organise settlement, movement and everyday land use.
Early visits reveal the ruins before heat and crowds build, and museum displays add essential historical context. Forest sounds and wildlife remain inseparable from the experience. Exploring beyond museums reveals waterfalls, a part of the destination that short visits often miss. The relationship between forest and waterfalls becomes clearest when the destination is explored over more than one area.
