OVERVIEW
Campeche faces the Gulf of Mexico behind restored defensive walls built to protect the former trading port. The historic centre follows a regular grid of colourful houses, churches and arcaded civic buildings, while bastions and museums explain centuries of maritime attack and commerce. A long promenade separates the old streets from the open water.
The walled centre is small enough for unhurried walking, with cafés and evening activity concentrated around the main square. Forts outside the core provide wider coastal views and archaeological collections. The city feels quieter than many regional capitals, and its carefully restored streets make the urban history easy to read.
