OVERVIEW
Orkney is an archipelago north of mainland Scotland, with low green islands, rocky coasts and small settlements connected by ferries and causeways. Neolithic monuments and later wartime remains are unusually concentrated. Beyond the central area, inhabited islands and island interior continue to organise settlement, movement and everyday land use. Away from the principal landmarks, boat routes gives way gradually to coast across the wider area.
Driving, walking and island hopping reveal strong differences between communities and shorelines. Weather and ferry schedules shape plans, while long summer light gives the landscape a distinctive openness. Time spent around coast also brings islands into view, adding a different layer to the visit. A visit centred only on boat routes would overlook coast, where the wider landscape and local activity remain visible.
