Aberdeen is a port city in north-east Scotland, built between two rivers and facing the North Sea. Much of the centre is constructed from pale granite, giving its civic buildings and long streets a consistent appearance that changes noticeably with the light. A historic university quarter, an active commercial harbour and a wide sandy beach all lie within the urban area, showing that the city is more varied than its business reputation suggests.

The centre combines formal architecture and museums with the everyday activity of a major fishing and energy port. Older residential lanes and university buildings provide a quieter contrast, while the seafront offers open views only a short distance away. The surrounding castles, fishing towns and mountain landscapes are easy to combine with the city, whose own architecture and maritime identity remain worthwhile.
