OVERVIEW
Omo Valley is a broad region in southern Ethiopia, with river lowlands, dry savanna and isolated settlements inhabited by several distinct communities. Livelihoods include pastoralism, farming and trade across difficult terrain. Local settlements sits alongside surrounding slopes, placing the principal sights within a broader inhabited landscape. The destination is physically divided between surrounding slopes and valley floor, with roads and settlements linking the two.
Travel requires experienced local guidance and careful attention to consent, photography and community benefit. Cultural encounters should never be treated as spectacle, while current security and road conditions require recent information. A visit centred only on local settlements would overlook surrounding slopes, where the wider landscape and local activity remain visible.
