OVERVIEW
Addis Ababa is Ethiopia’s capital, set at high altitude in a broad basin surrounded by hills. The city contains national museums, imperial landmarks, important churches and the headquarters of the African Union, alongside rapidly expanding residential and commercial districts. Its enormous open market, busy minibus routes and varied neighbourhoods show a metropolis that is both a national political centre and a place of intense everyday trade.
The city is spread out and can appear visually fragmented, but its museums, food and coffee culture provide strong points of connection. Ethiopian history is presented through archaeology, royal collections and religious art, while restaurants and music venues introduce living regional traditions. The altitude and traffic may require adjustment, and choosing sights by area makes the city easier to understand.
