OVERVIEW
Ometepe is a large island in Lake Nicaragua, formed by two volcanic cones connected by a low isthmus. Villages, farms and forested slopes occupy the lower terrain, while roads circle only part of the island. The destination is physically divided between island interior and forest, with roads and settlements linking the two. Across the wider area, forest remains closely connected with farms, rather than forming an isolated visitor zone.
Hiking, cycling and beach time create varied days, although roads can be slow and conditions rough. Staying in one area allows more time for village life and the island’s changing volcanic views. Beaches is encountered differently from island interior, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination.
