OVERVIEW
Olympic Peninsula is a large region in Washington state, combining temperate rainforest, rugged coastline and high mountain terrain. Roads circle the outer edge, while much of the interior remains protected wilderness with few direct crossings. Opposite coasts sits alongside rainforest, placing the principal sights within a broader inhabited landscape. The transition between rainforest and opposite coasts is visible across the destination, especially away from its best known centre.
Driving distances are long, so choosing one or two sectors creates a more rewarding trip. Forest walks, tide pools and alpine routes offer very different experiences within the same region. Coast draws most attention, but forest contributes equally to the destination’s character and daily life. Exploring beyond opposite coasts reveals mountain terrain, a part of the destination that short visits often miss.
