OVERVIEW
Olympia is a small archaeological town in the western Peloponnese, centred on the remains of a major sanctuary dedicated to Zeus. Temples, training grounds and stadium ruins are spread through a wooded valley beside a modern settlement. Away from the principal landmarks, central streets gives way gradually to temples across the wider area. The destination is physically divided between architecture and temples, with roads and settlements linking the two.
The museum adds essential context to the surviving architecture and sculpture. Early or late visits reveal a calmer landscape and make it easier to imagine the scale of the ancient festival. Museums is encountered differently from architecture, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination. Museums is encountered differently from architecture, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination, with central streets providing an additional point of connection.
