OVERVIEW
Delphi occupies a steep slope beneath Mount Parnassus, overlooking a broad valley of olive groves. Temples, treasuries, a theatre and stadium climb the hillside along the route once used by pilgrims consulting the oracle of Apollo. The surrounding mountains and olive-filled valley remain visible throughout the climb.
The museum is essential for understanding the sculpture, ritual objects and religious role of the sanctuary. The main ceremonial route climbs past treasuries, a central temple, theatre and stadium, revealing how pilgrims moved through the site. Heat and steep paths can be demanding, so early morning visits are considerably more comfortable.

THINGS TO DO
Visit Temple of Apollo with attention to its continuing religious meaning as well as its architecture or history. Dress and behave respectfully, and expect access to change during services.
Visit Delphi’s principal museums
Focus on Delphi’s principal museums for a collection that adds real context to Delphi. Check current exhibitions and opening days, then allow enough time for the sections most relevant to the destination.
Trace local history at Thermopylae
Use Thermopylae to understand a specific part of Delphi’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
Explore Ancient Theater to understand the ancient settlement, belief or engineering that shaped Delphi. Allow enough time to read the site rather than treating it as a photo stop.
