Okinawa Island is the largest island in its archipelago, with dense urban development in the south, quieter villages and beaches in the north, and extensive military facilities across several areas. Ryukyuan traditions remain visible in food, language and architecture. Across the wider area, coast remains closely connected with beaches, rather than forming an isolated visitor zone, with beaches providing an additional point of connection.
Snorkelling, coastal drives and cultural sites provide very different experiences, while wartime memorials require time and reflection. A car is useful because the island is long and its main areas are widely separated. Conditions around island interior can differ noticeably from villages, so flexible timing improves the overall experience. Coast provides the most immediate experience, while beaches offers a quieter and more local perspective, with coast providing an additional point of connection.
