OVERVIEW
Amami Oshima is a large island between mainland Japan and Okinawa, with forested mountains, deeply indented coasts and small settlements. Much of the interior is covered by subtropical woodland that supports rare species found only in the region. Mangroves, coral reefs and long beaches add further variety, while local music, textiles and food reflect a culture distinct from both the Japanese mainland and Okinawa.
The island is large enough to require careful planning, and a car is the simplest way to reach forests, beaches and villages spread along the coast. Wildlife walks, paddling and snorkelling are major activities, but cultural workshops and local restaurants help explain the island beyond its scenery. Development is modest outside the main town, giving many areas a quiet, residential character.

THINGS TO DO
Taste regional food scene in Amami Oshima
Use Amami Oshima’s regional food scene as a starting point for tasting food connected to Amami Oshima, choosing regional dishes or produce rather than a generic international meal. Opening days may shape the plan.
Snorkel around Amami Oshima’s principal snorkelling waters only when sea conditions and access are suitable. Use local guidance where currents or reefs are unfamiliar, and never promise particular marine-life sightings.
Paddle Amami Oshima’s main waters
Paddle around Amami Oshima’s main paddling waters on a route suited to local water and weather conditions. Hire equipment or a guide where currents, access points or changing forecasts make independent planning difficult.
Look for island wildlife in Amami Oshima
Look for wildlife around Amami Oshima’s island wildlife with attention to habitat and responsible viewing distances. Seasons affect animal movement, and wild sightings should never be guaranteed.
Find Amami Oshima’s coastline
Spend time at Amami Oshima’s coastline rather than treating every nearby beach as interchangeable. Swimming conditions, access and facilities can vary, so check locally before entering the water.
