OVERVIEW
North Cascades is a vast mountain region in Washington state, with jagged peaks, glaciers and forested valleys divided by rivers and lakes. Roads reach only a small part of the protected landscape. The destination is physically divided between forest and high peaks, with roads and settlements linking the two. The transition between high peaks and glaciers is visible across the destination, especially away from its best known centre.
Hiking and scenic driving provide the main access, while many high routes require substantial experience. Snow and weather can limit trails well into summer. The relationship between mountain terrain and lake shore becomes clearest when the destination is explored over more than one area. The strongest contrast comes between forest and mountain terrain, which support different activities and daily rhythms.
