Nkhata Bay

Nkhata Bay is a small town on the shore of Lake Malawi, built across steep hills around a natural harbour. Markets, residential areas and guesthouses climb above clear water and rocky bays. Settlement follows the relationship between lakes and markets, which remains visible beyond the main visitor routes, with lake shore providing an additional point of connection.

Swimming, boat trips and local food create an easy pace. The town is informal and social, while nearby villages provide a quieter view of lakeside life. The relationship between lakes and bay becomes clearest when the destination is explored over more than one area. Harbour draws most attention, but bay contributes equally to the destination’s character and daily life.
