OVERVIEW
Likoma Island lies in Lake Malawi, with sandy beaches, fishing communities and low wooded hills. A large early twentieth century cathedral forms the island’s most striking landmark. Across the wider area, lake shore remains closely connected with villages, rather than forming an isolated visitor zone. Settlement follows the relationship between beaches and port, which remains visible beyond the main visitor routes.
Swimming, walking and village stays create a slow pace. Transport is infrequent, but the remoteness preserves a strong sense of local life and open water. Local boats and footpaths remain the main ways to move around. Exploring beyond port reveals beaches, a part of the destination that short visits often miss.
