OVERVIEW
New River Gorge is a deep river region in West Virginia, with sandstone cliffs, forested slopes and former mining communities spread along the valley. A monumental bridge crosses the gorge near the principal visitor area. Cliffs and gorge belong to the same connected landscape, although they often feel distinct on arrival. The wider destination extends from forest towards river, with local communities occupying the ground between them, with river providing an additional point of connection.
Hiking, rafting and climbing provide the strongest experiences. Industrial remains and local towns add important context beyond the dramatic natural scenery. Forest provides the most immediate experience, while port offers a quieter and more local perspective. Routes through gorge lead naturally towards forest, so the experience changes without requiring long transfers.
