OVERVIEW
Hocking Hills is a wooded region in south eastern Ohio, known for deeply eroded sandstone formations, narrow gorges and recessed caves. Trails connect waterfalls, rock shelters and cliffs within several nearby parks. The surrounding area contains cabins, small towns and quiet rural roads rather than one central settlement. The transition between gorge and forest is visible across the destination, especially away from its best known centre.
Short walks reveal the best known formations, while longer routes provide more solitude in the forest. Autumn colour and spring water flow create the strongest seasonal changes. Weekend crowds can be heavy, but early starts and lesser known trail areas offer a calmer experience. Exploring beyond caves reveals waterfalls, a part of the destination that short visits often miss.
